Our Story

We like to school.

Fish Tales

We’re Murray and Jake, a father and son team passionate about fish and our family-run business. We have always been enthusiastic aquarium hobbyists and are ready to share our expertise with Washington DC. We’re experienced in maintaining fish tanks with a variety of breeds. If you can imagine a fish sanctuary, we can build it. We’ve been breeding pairs in our home tanks for years!

Meet Murray

I’m Murray, Jake’s father, and one-half of Capital Exotic Fish. I’ve been running a clean energy consulting company for 20 years and am excited to bring my business acumen to the aquarium community.

Meet Jake

I’m Jake, the other half of Capital Exotic Fish. I’m an avid angler and newly-minted entrepreneur. (Some of my most exciting catches include a 250-pound bull shark, a large grouper, and tarpon.) I can’t wait to begin this business journey in the DC community.

Meet Chris | General Manager

Chris Teem joined Capital Exotic Fish as its general manager. Over the past 20-plus years, Chris cultivated an intense passion for fish and aquarium development, service, and maintenance. His mentor, Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, taught Chris everything he knows about how to breed fish. Through Chris’ travels overseas, studying fish in their natural environments, and working for zoological societies, Chris has developed extensive aquarist knowledge and insights. Finally, he loves turning aquariums into living art pieces; he specializes in complex paludariums.

The Chill Zone

When you visit us, explore our selection, then hang out and relax in the Chill Zone. A place where you can sit down, listen to great tunes, and watch our fish in a 600-gallon tank.

It’s the perfect area for you to observe fish and think about how to integrate something similar into your home or business. Let the Chill Zone inspire you and get you in the mindset to build your aquarium.
